LOS ANGELES, Calif. - Freshman designated player  Jessica Castaneda (Bakersfield, Calif., Ridgeview HS) connected for an RBI double on her birthday to lead the CSU Bakersfield softball team in a 5-1 loss to Long Beach State on Sunday at the UCLA's Stacy Winsberg Memorial Tournament at Easton Stadium.

The game was the final of the opening weekend for the Roadrunners, who fell to McNeese State 4-2 and No. 17 Texas A&M 7-1 on Sunday.

In Sunday's game, CSUB took a 1-0 lead in the fourth inning when centerfielder Laura King (R-Sr., Camarillo, Calif., UNLV) was hit by a pitch. King then stole second, and after being replaced by pinch runner Taylor DeSilva (Jr., Sunnyvale, Calif., University of the Pacific), Castaneda crushed a line drive double over the head of Long Beach State left fielder Nalani St. Germain to plate DeSilva.

The 49ers fought back in the bottom of the frame as Sarah Carrasco hit a two-run double to put Long Beach State up 2-1 and chase freshman starter Amber Mills (Fresno, Calif., Clovis West HS) from the mound. Kelsie Monroe (So., Los Banos, Calif., Delta College) entered in relief and gave up one run to increase Long Beach State's lead to 3-1, but was helped out by a bases-loaded diving catch from junior left fielder Karissa Veiga (Hemet, Calif., Hemet HS) to prevent further damage.

Long Beach State added to its lead in the bottom of the fifth inning when Karli Sandoval hit a two-run homer to make it 5-1

Mills tossed five strikeouts in her starting debut, giving up three earned runs in 3.1 innings on five hits with no walks. Monroe gave up two runs on three hits and two walks in 2.2 innings of relief with two strikeouts.

Shortstop Shay Fryer (Jr., San Diego, Calif., Unviersity HS) and rightfielder Sydney Raeber (Fr., Hanford, Calif., Hanford HS) each added singles for CSUB.

The 'Runners will be back in action next weekend at the Stanford Nike Invitational in Palo Alto, Calif. CSUB will play two games against the host Cardinal, two against Cal State Northridge and one against UC Davis.
