CHICAGO, Ill.--For the third time in four games, CSU Bakersfield played a future Western Athletic Conference opponent and for the third time, the Roadrunners came away with a victory as CSUB defeated Chicago State 70-51 Thursday night. The victory marked the fifth in a row for the Roadrunners.
Trailing 22-18 coming out of the final media timeout of the first half, the Roadrunners closed the frame on a 9-0 run, bolstered by Tyonna Outland (R-So., Compton, Calif., Lynwood HS) who was fouled on a made three-pointer and converted the free throw attempt for a rare four-point play. CSUB would extend the spurt to 19-3 over a 7:42 span (covering the final 3:21 of the first and the first 4:21 of the second) to extend the lead to 37-25.
Back-to-back three's from Amber Williams (Sr., Fontana, Calif., Etiwanda HS) made it 47-29 with just over 12 minutes to go in the game. CSUB would outscore the Cougars 52-29 over the final 23:41 of the game.
Williams led the 'Runners with 15 points. Outland and Janae Coffee (R-So., Fresno, Calif., Long Beach State) each scored 14 pounds. Batabe Zempare (Fr., Accra, Ghana, Scottsdale Chapparal HS) grabbed a season best 13 rebounds to go along with eight points. CSUB held Chicago State to 31% shooting for the game and outrebounded the Cougars 45-33.
CSUB is off until Jan. 30 when the Roadrunners host Cal State Northridge at 7 p.m.
