CSUB swimmer Alex Daneke (Sr., Lodi, Calif.,UC Davis) has been selected as CSUB's Student Athlete of the Week for the week of Jan. 14. Daneke won the 100 (:52.24) and the 200 (1:53.18) backstroke events Saturday at UC San Diego. Daneke led the 200 medley that finished third (1:34.51) and anchored the 400 free relay which placed second (3:07.09).
Daneke says his recent success can be credited to the team focusing on what they need to improve on for each event.
"Lately we have been doing a lot of focus in practice on what we need to focus on strength wise for each event, for me that would be working on my under water work off the wall, 3 or 4 dolphin kicks off the wall," Daneke said. "I've been really holding myself to that in each practice, so that's really helped in the last couple events over the meet last weekend."
Daneke feels that the season has been successful so far and credits the team as a whole for stepping up. The 'Runners beat their first Pac-12 school this year when defeating Arizona State on November 9, 155-139, which Alex thinks says a lot about their success as a team.
"At the beginning of the season we were told we were a young team and we weren't going to have a spectacular season, but I feel that the guys have really stepped up this year and really proved those people were saying those things wrong," Daneke said.
Daneke is a chemistry major at CSUB, and plans on going to a pharmacy school after graduation with hopes of becoming a pharmacist.
