BAKERSFIELD, Calif.--Normally a 31-point performance by Amber Williams (Sr., Fontana, Calif., Etiwanda HS) would be the first item of note on a final stat sheet, but teammate Janae Coffee (R-So., Fresno, Calif., Long Beach State) nearly turned in a triple-double as CSU Bakersfield defeated UT Pan American 85-62 Tuesday night.
Coffee, a 6-4 center, scored 22 points, grabbed 17 rebounds, and blocked a CSUB Division I record nine shots in only 22 minutes against the Broncs. Coffee was 8-of-13 from the floor and also turned in one assist and one steal. Williams, lit up UTPA, scoring on 12-of-22 field goal attempts including seven three-pointers (in a school Division I record 14 attempts). She was one point away from her career high of 32 which was registered against Santa Clara in the 2011-12 season opener. The 5-6 guard also recorded five assists and one steal.
The Roadrunners (4-15) led 49-32 halftime, shooting 51.4% from the field (18-of-35). The Broncs (5-11) would get as close as 11 in the second half, but a 15-4 spurt with just under eight minutes to go put the game between the future WAC foes away. Ciarra Ford (Sr., Long Beach, Calif., Mt. Sac College) was the final Roadrunner in double figures as she scored 11 to go along with a season best seven assists.
CSUB is off until Jan. 15 when the Roadrunners travel to Houston Baptist for a 7 p.m. (CST) start.
