LAS VEGAS, Nev.--Three CSU Bakersfield wrestlers placed at the 31st annual Cliff Keen Las Vegas Invitational Saturday.
Bryce Hammond (R-Fr., Bakersfield, Calif., Bakersfield HS) finished fifth at 174 pounds. Hammond began the day with a 12-0 decison of Cornell's George Pickett on the consolation round of 12. In the consolation quarterfinals, Hammond pinned Northern Iowa's Cody Caldwell 2:48 into the bout to set up a consolation semifinal match against Navy's Matthew Miller. Miller pinned Hammond to send Hammond into the fifth place bout. Against Scott Liegel of Wisconsin, Hammond earned a 8-2 victory for fifth
Ian Nickell (R-Fr., Bakersfield, Calif., Bakersfield HS) placed sixth at 133 pounds. Nickell defeated Colin Johnston of West Virginia 7-4 in the consolation round of 12. In the consolation quarterfinals, Nickell handed North Dakota State's Joshua Rodriguez 4-3. Nickell took on Cal Poly's Devon Lotito in the consolation semifinals where he dropped a 9-0 decision to his fellow Pac-12 competitor. In the fifth place match, Nickell was pinned by Virginia's George DiCamillo :59 seconds into the match.
Timmy Box (R-Fr., Bakersfield, Calif., Bakersfield HS) finished eighth at 141 pounds. Box began Saturday by pinning North Dakota State's Mark Erickson at the 6:08 mark of their 141-pound match to get the day going in the consolation round of 12. Box lost by technical fall to West Virginia's Nathan Pennesi in the consolation quarterfinals. In the 7th place match, Box lost 9-5 to Ridge Kiley of Nebraska.
Tyler Iwamura (R-Sr., San Diego, Calif., Santa Fe Christian HS) made it to Saturday's competition, but lost in the consolation round of 12 to Tyler Cox of Wyoming by a 15-5 score.
Adam Fierro (So., 157, Bakersfield, Calif., Bakersfield HS) advanced to day two of the meet, but was pinned by Boise State's Georgi Ivanov in the consolation round of 12.
As a team, CSUB will finish 15th (44). Ohio State (124.5) won by one point over Missouri to take home the team award.
The Roadrunners return home next Sunday when CSUB hosts San Francisco State at 2 p.m. Please note, based on popular demand, the dual will be wrestled in CSUB's Physical Education Building, the "Old Gym".
