LONG BEACH, Calif.--The CSU Bakersfield men's swimming team improved on day two of the Area Invitational Friday.

The 800 free relay made up of Mitchell Huxhold (So., Escondido, Calif., San Pasqual HS), Gabriel Bertrand (So., Tibro, Sweden, Nykopingssimg Gymnasium), Alex Daneke (R-Sr., Lodi, Calif., UC Davis), and Dennis Cassidy (So., Whittier, Calif., La Serna HS) earned a sixth place showing with a 6:43.94 performance. 

The 200 medley relay of Daneke, Brett Emery (Fr., Sacramento, Calif., Bella Vista HS), Dan Wickensheimer (Sr., Fort Wayne, Ind., Bakersfield Stockdale HS), Mitch Wurm (Sr., Mesa, Ariz., Dobson HS) placed eighth in a time of 1:32.53.

Individually, Daneke finished ninth in the 100 backstroke (:50.19). Huxhold was 13th in the 200 freestyle (1:40.48) whiel Bertrand finished 19th (1:40.15) in that race.

Jordan Singleton (R-Jr., Mission HIlls, Calif., Ventura CC) and Will Tyrrell (Fr., Portland, Ore., Grant HS) were 17th and 21st respectively in the 100 back. Wickensheimer earned points (19th) in the 100 butterfly (:50.20). Tomas Bruce (Jr., Brisbane/QLD, Australia, Grossmont College) scored (24th) in the 400 IM (4:13.33). Emery also scored (24th) in the 100 breaststroke (:58.92).

"This was the men's team that I know!" said CSUB direcor of swimming Chris Hansen. "We got big swims from Huxhold, Bertrand, Daneke and Wickensheimer. Newcomers Charles Yuhas and Mario Sutka stood up tonight as well.  Like our women's team, the men are not as rested like we have been in past years and we are swimming much faster then we did in some events."

The Arena Invitational concludes Saturday. Prelims begin at 9 a.m. with the finals getting underway at 6 p.m.
