FLAGSTAFF, Ariz.--Janae Coffee's (R-So., Fresno, Calif., Long Beach State) sank a pair of free throws with 38 seconds remaining as CSU Bakersfield defeated Northern Arizona 71-68 Monday night.
The Lumberjacks' (0-2) next to last offensive possession saw UNA get three offensive rebouds, but could not come away with a score. Tyonna Outland (R-So., Compton, Calif., Lynwood HS) finally came away the ball and was fouled. Outland made 1-of-2 free throws. Amy Patton's three-point at the buzzer was no good, giving CSUB the victory.
"Janae kept staying with it, made it tough on the them and she was able to use her strengths to foul out both of (Northern Arizona's) starting bigs," said CSUB head coach Greg McCall.
CSUB overcame an 11-point first half deficit as the Roadrunners used a 12-2 run to start the second half to take the lead. CSUB would lead by as much as 10 in the second half.
Coffee posted a double-double of 11 points and 13 rebounds to pace CSUB. Amber Williams (Sr., Fontana, Calif., Etiwanda HS) led the Roadrunners with 15 points. Outland scored 11 points as did Cebrina Johnson (R-So., Corona, Calif., Santiago HS). Johnson grabbed eight rebounds. Ciarra Ford (Sr., Long Beach, Calif., Mt. SAC College) scored 10 and added four assists. Patton led all scorers with 29 points.
Patton is a really good player. We did a really good job against her, trying to make her work for every bucket she scored," McCall said. "We struggled with their zone in the first half, but we were able to shoot over it in the second half and that forced them to play man-to-man. Out defense did a good job and we were able to use our bench and keep using fresh bodies to overcome the altitude."CSUB (1-1) returns to the Icardo Center this weekend for games on Friday against Sacramento State (7 p.m.) and Sunday against UC Riverside (4 p.m.).
