SAN ANTONIO, Texas--In a battle of the Roadrunners, Sam Peña (Sr., Bakersfield, Calif., Bakersfield HS) scored two goals and had one assists to lead CSU Bakersfield (5-8-2) past UT-San Antonio (2-9-2) 5-3 Thursday night at UTSA.
Emily Noethe's (So., Dallas, Ga., Spaulding HS) goal from a Peña feed in the fourth minute to give CSUB an early advantage. Peña made it 2-0 with a tally in the seventh minute. Redshirt senior Daisy Vazquez (Redwood City, Calif., Woodside, Calif.) scored her first career goal in the 23rd minute when she bent a corner kick in.
A Peña blast from 25 yards out a little over nine minutes later created a four-goal advantage for CSU Bakersfield. Anisa Patterson got UTSA on the board with her first goal of the season at 33:14.
Erica Shelton (Jr., Bakersfield, Calif., UC Santa Barbara) scored four minutes into the second half for the final CSUB tally of the night. Liv Nyhegn's header in the 55nd minute made it 5-2 with Kirby Wright getting UTSA to within two with a header off a free kick in the 79th minute.
Peña tied her own school Division I record for most points in a match with six and her own school D-1 mark for most assists in a game (2). CSUB also tied its own Division I record for most goals in a match (third time scoring five since the transition in 2007).
"I was very pleased with our first half of play," said CSUB head coach Melissa Phillips. "We showed a dominance and maturity overall, but especially in the attack. In the second half, we should have allowed them an opportunity to get in the game as we were the better team. But I am very happy with the performance."
CSU Bakersfield travels to New Mexico State Sunday for a 1 p.m. (MDT) start.
