BAKERSFIELD, Calif. - Former CSU Bakersfield women’s basketball standout Christine Kepenekian was officially added to the Armenia National Team roster in an announcement made by the Basketball Federation of Armenia. Kepenekian and the rest of the Armenia National Team will be participating in the FIBA Europe women’s Div. C tournament in Yerevan, Armenia from June 28–July 3.

“Christine has brought her strong three–point shooting skills and competitiveness to the Armenia National Team,” said Armenia Head Coach Gia Ghazanchyan.

This season marks the first time the Basketball Federation of Armenia has allowed players from outside the country to even attend tryouts for its national team.

“Christine strengthens our team in numerous ways,” said Assistant Coach Vartan Khachadourian. “She has also faced strong competition before.”

As a Roadrunner, Kepenekian overcame injuries early in her career to become one of CSUB’s all–time great players. She holds 16 top 10 career program records and nine top 10 individual season records. She is No. 2 on the Roadrunners’ all–time leading rebounder lists (569) and is one of just six players to surpass 1,000 career points (1,035).

For Kepenekian, she now moves one step closer to earning Boseman B player classification which will make it easier for her to be hired by other European professional teams.

“It means a lot to make the team because I get to represent my country,” said Kepenekian. “Hopefully it will gain me some exposure to play for other professional teams in the future if I do well in the games. Either way this will be a great experience for me.”

Armenia begins play on June 28 against Gibraltar.
