BAKERSFIELD, Calif.--Bakersfield (23-27, 14-9 WAC) rallied three times from one-run deficits to defeat New Mexico State (18-27, 9-11 WAC) 7-6 in 13 innings Saturday night at Hardt Field.
Mylz Jones' (So., Palmdale, Calif., Paraclete HS) two-out RBI double in the bottom of the first opened the scoring. A Roadrunner error in the top of the fourth led to two unearned Aggies' runs. New Mexico State added two more in the fifth on a single from Kyle Kilgore who drove in both with a single. It wasn't for Gusbeth's 10th outfield assist of the inning, the Aggies would have scored more in the inning.
CSUB loaded the bases with no outs in the sixth, but could only push across one run on an Allen Gwynn (R-Sr., Santa Paula, Calif., Ventura College) sacrifice fly that plated Jones. With one out in the bottom of the seventh, Bakersfield put runners on the corners. New Mexico starter Billy Conard was pulled in favor of Riley Barr to face Jones, the No. 5 hitter in the order.
Barr got Jones to hit into an apparant double play ball, but it was misplayed by NM State second baseman Chad Ramsey which allowed Gusbeth to score and move Soloman Williams (Jr., Long Beach, Calif., Golden West College) to third. Barr struck out Garrett Pierce (Jr., Bakersfield, Calif., Centennial HS) before walking Ross Hough (Jr., Bakersfield, Calif., Central Arizona College) to load the bases. Gwynn lined out to Ramsey to end the inning. CSUB stranded the tying run at first in the eighth when with two outs, Gusbeth was retired for the first time on the night when he flew out to center.
With two outs in the bottom of the ninth, Pierce reached on an infield single and moved to second on a NM State error. Hough came to bat against the fourth Aggies' pitcher of the night, Trey Higginbotham. Down 1-2 in the count, Hough tied the score with a double down the left field line. Jordie Hein (Jr., Scottsdale, Ariz., Chapparal HS) ran for Hough and advanced to third on a Higginbotham wild pitch. Gwynn hit a screamer towards first base where Kristoffer Koerper grabbed the ball out of the air to send it to extra innings.
After a 1-2-3 NM State 10th, Ryan Grotjohn (Fr., Cave Creek, Ariz., Brophy College Prep) led off the bottom of the inning with a walk. He moved to second on an Oscar Sanay (Sr., Chula Vista, Calif., Bonita Vista HS) sacrifice fly. Max Carter (Fr., Bakersfield, Calif., Stockdale HS) singled to bring up Gusbeth who grounded into a double play to end the inning.
After retiring 11 in a row, in relief, Nick Rogowski (Jr., Woodbridge, Va., Cypress College) allowed back to back singles to Taylor Noyer and Michael Medina with one out in the top of the 11th. Rogowski struck out out pinch-hitter Joseph Koerper before Michael Paulson singled to left to put the Aggies up 5-4. After loading the bases on a Derek Umphres infield single, Koerper struck out, Rogowski's ninth of the night.
Williams opened the bottom of the 11th with a double to left center. Jones grounded out to first to advance Williams to third. NM State brough the infield in to face Pierce. Down 0-2 in the count, Pierce recorded a sacrifice fly to drive in Williams and tie the game once again.
Logan Trowbridge (Jr., Santa Cruz, Calif., College of San Mateo) reached on an infield single but Gwynn grounded out to end the frame. Kilgore reached on a CSUB error to open the 12th. Rogowski would get the next three outs to complete reach a season high in inning pitched this season with seven.
Sanay hit a one-out double in the bottom of the 12th. Matt Stein relieved Aggies' closer Trey Gonzales who came on in the 10th. Stein's first batter was Carter who popped out to short. Gusbeth grounded out to second for the final out.
Carter, the CSUB closer, entered the game in the top of the 13th to face the top of the New Mexico State order when Medina, the leadoff hitter, drove in a go-ahead run. Carter would retire the next three batters in order. Zach Freeman hit the mound for the Aggies to try and close it out but the first batter he faced, Williams, led off the bottom of the 13th with his fifth home run of the season, a blast to right center.
Jones followed Williams' homer by recording his third hit of the night, a single to right center. He moved to second on a Pierce sacrifice bunt. Trowbridge walked. Gwynn hit a grounder to the Aggies' shortstop, Kent Blackstone, who committed an error which allowed Jones to score the gamewinning run.
Chance Gusbeth (So., Lancaster, Calif., Desert Christian HS) tied his career high with four hits, going 4-for-7 with two runs scored. Sanay and Williams each posted three hitswhile Jones extended his hitting streak to 14 as he was 3-for-4 with two RBI's. The Bakersfield pitchers; James Barragan (Jr., Bakersfield, Calif., Stockdale HS), Rogowski, and Carter combined to strike out 16, breaking the CSUB school record for most strikeouts in a game. The previous mark was 14 set earlier this year at Utah Valley in game one of that series.
Medina ended the night 3-for-7 to pace the Aggies. Five NM State players had two hits. Kilgore had two RBI's.
The series concludes Sunday with a 1 p.m. start.
