BAKERSFIELD, Calif.--UC Santa Barbara (27-14-1) scored four runs on just two hits in the top of the eighth as the Gauchos defeated Bakersfield (20-27) 7-3 Tuesday night.
Robby Nesovic reached on a CSUB passed ball after striking out to open the eighth. Pinch-runner Ryan Clark moved to second on an Andrew Calica's sac bunt. Woody Woodward walked to bring up Newell who hit by an Alec Daily (Fr., Temecula, Calif., Great Oak HS) pitch to load the bases. 'Runner closer Max Carter (Fr., Bakersfield, Calif., Stockdale HS) came in to face pinch hitter Billy Fredrick. Fredrick singled to left to drive in Clark for the go-ahead run.
Joey Epperson's RBI ground out to third gave UCSB a two-run advantage. Nick Dermenjian (Jr., Fair Oaks, Calif., American River College) replaced Carter to face Peter Maris. Peter Maris doubled down the right field line to clear the bases for a 7-3 UCSB lead. After a walk, cleanup hitter Greg Mahle lined out to center for the final out.
With UCSB leading in the bottom of the first Chance Gusbeth's (So., Lancaster, Calif., Desert Christian HS) triple plated Oscar Sanay (Sr., Chula Vista, Calif., Bonita Vista HS) to tie the score in the bottom of the first. An RBI double from Soloman Williams (Jr., Long Beach, Calif., Golden West College) drove in Gubeth for a 'Runner lead.
With two outs in the top of the second, Cameron Newell laid down a two-strike bunt for hit. Jackson Morrow singled up the middle to push Newell up 90 feet. Epperson's RBI's single tied the score. Morrow scored on a CSUB passed ball for a 3-2 lead.
Sanay tied the game at three with a two-out RBI single in the bottom of the sixth that drove in Allen Gwynn (R-Sr., Santa Paula, Calif., Ventura College). Gusbeth was hit by a Connor Baits' pitch to begin the seventh. UC Santa Barbara brought in their closer, Dillon Tate, to face Williams, the CSUB cleanup hitter. Tate struck out the 6-7 'Runner first baseman. Tate then got Mylz Jones (So., Palmdale, Calif., Paraclete HS) to ground into fielders choice. Bakersfield put the hit and run on for Garrett Pierce (Jr., Bakersfield, Calif., Centennial HS) who responded with a single to right pushing Jones to third. It was for naught as David Metzgar (Fr., Lancaster, Calif., Paraclete HS) ground out to Tate for the final out.
Tate would retire the final six 'Runners he faced to improve to 2-1 on the year. Mahle and Maris each went 3-for-5. Sanay, Gusbeth, Williams, and Jones each recorded two hits.
Bakersfield hosts Fresno State Wednesday night at 6 p.m. to continue the 'Runners homestand.
