BAKERSFIELD, Calif.-- The ‘Runners recognized their seniors in between the last two home games of the season on Saturday and celebrated on the field after a sweep of the doubleheader.

Game 1: Bakersfield 2, Seattle 1

Kelsie Monroe (Jr., Los Banos, Calif., San Joaquin Delta College) and Richelle Ashburn each got the starts for their respective teams as the two pitchers turned the early innings of the game into a pitchers’ duel. The two combined for only three hits given up in the first three and a half innings.

Bakersfield finally broke through with well executed small ball in the bottom of the fourth. After Karissa Veiga (Sr., Hemet, Calif., Hemet HS) led off the inning with a single, Shay Fryer (Sr., San Diego, Calif., University HS) laid down a perfect sacrifice bunt that set up Amy Ricciardi’s (Sr., Chino Hills) RBI single. The ‘Runners would continue to give Seattle U trouble as Bakersfield went on to load the bases. Ashburn induced a ground out that would have ended the inning, but an error by her second baseman gave the ‘Runners a 2-0 lead.

Monroe continued to roll through the Redhawk lineup as the junior pitcher allowed only two hits going into the top of the seventh. Seattle U had no plans to go down quietly as the Redhawks loaded the bases with no outs. Monroe struck out the next batter before Malin Murray hit an RBI single to make the score 2-1. A groundout forced the runner out at home and gave Bakersfield two outs before Monroe induced a foul ball that Madison Bundy (Jr., Anacortes, Wash., Oregon State) dove for and snared just before it hit the ground. The dazzling defensive play ended the game and secured the 2-1 victory for the ‘Runners.

Veiga had two hits in the first game while Ricciardi gathered the only RBI for the ‘Runners. Monroe finished the game giving up only five hits and one run while striking out four batters on the way to her ninth win of the season and 11th complete game.

Game 2: Bakersfield 3, Seattle 0

Bakersfield struck early and consistently with a single run in each of the first three innings. Veiga's leadoff double in the first led to an RBI squeeze bunt for Ricciardi. Bakersfield scored its second run after Bundy stole second and Kara Frankhouser (Sr., Bakersfield, Calif., Bakersfield College) singled her home. The 'Runners took the 3-0 lead they would hold on to after Sydney Raeber's (So., Hanford, Calif., Hanford HS) double to the gap allowed Bundy to collect an RBI single.

Lyndsay Klimenko (Fr., Half Moon Bay, Calif., Half Moon Bay HS) took a no-hitter into the top of the fourth as the Bakersfield starting pitcher. The Redhawks threatened in that inning with back-to-back singles, but Klimenko ended any thought of scoring with an easy grounder. The freshman pitcher went on to hold Seattle U to only four hits in the game on her way to a complete game shutout.

Bundy ended the doubleheader going 3-6 with an RBI and a run scored while Veiga also collected three hits and scored twice. The sweep of the doubleheader gave Bakersfield its first ever WAC series win since joining the conference this season.

"I think they did a fantastic job rallying behind the seniors and finishing our home series on a positive note," said Bakersfield's Head Coach Crissy Buck-Ziegler. "Kara and Taylor are two players that are so unselfish and I can't say enough about Karissa, Shay, and Amy. They are three great players that I had the honor of coaching."

The 'Runners(13-35-1, 3-9 WAC) will finish their regular season with a doubleheader against Cal Poly Tuesday at 3 p.m. and a three-game series against UMKC this weekend.
