SAN JOSE, Calif. ? The CSUB baseball team fell 17-2 to San Jose State Sunday at Municipal Stadium as the Spartans took the three-game series sweep.
Bakersfield (4-17) once again struggled to get their offense going early and the Spartans got a hold of CSUB starter Brandon Van Dam (0-1).
After taking a 1-0 lead in the first, San Jose State ((19-5) broke the game open with a five-run third inning. With one out, Kyle Bellows doubled to right-center, Danny Stienstra followed with a hard hit single to short and Jacob Bruns knocked a single up the middle to send Bellows home. A double steal put runners on second and third for Corey Valine, who hit an RBI ground out to second.
The next two batters were hit by pitch to load the bases for Craig Hertler who blasted a bases clearing double to right-center to complete the Spartan scoring.
San Jose State tacked on one run in the fourth, five in the sixth, four in the seventh and one in the eighth.
The Roadrunners scored a pair of runs off reliever Luke Mazzanti in the eighth, beginning with a one-out single to left by Martin Medina. Brandon Boren reached on a fielder's choice, as Medina was thrown out at second. Ryan McIntyre singled up the middle and Derek Geisinger followed with an RBI single, scoring Boren. JJ Henry then doubled down the left field line to score McIntyre.
McIntyre finished the day with a 4-for-4 performance at the plate, including a double and one run. Bakersfield finished with 10 hits.
Hertler went 5-for-6, including three doubles, with seven RBI's for the Spartans. SJSU also got a pair of hits from four different players. Starting pitcher Scott Sobczak completed seven innings, fanning seven, walking three and scattering six hits for zero runs.
Bakersfield travels to Moraga Monday to make up a previously rained out game with St. Mary's. The start time for the single match-up is 3 p.m.
