PISMO BEACH, Calif.—After dropping a 5-0 decision to Cal Poly, CSU Bakersfield remained alive at the Big West Beach Volleyball Tournament by defeating Sacramento State 3-2 in an elimination match.
CSUB entered the tournament as the No. 6 seed and lost to the third seed, Cal Poly (14-21), 5-0 in morning play. Emily Sonny and Hannah Hubbard defeated Carol Grasso and Sara Little 21-14, 21-13 at No. 1. Adlee Van Winden and Taylor Nelson swept Jocelyn Rodriguez and Madi Busler 21-16, 21-4 in the No. 2 match.
RaeAnn Greisen and Holland Boege handed Sarah Garrow and Ashley Prater a 22-20, 21-15 defeat at No. 3. Kayla Tinker and Ally Barber dropped a pair of sets (21-8, 21-16) to Savannah Niemen and Anna Gorman in the No. 4 match. Dora Beilin and Brayden Guenewald defeated Fabiana Andrade and Hannah Manzanares 21-14, 21-16 at No. 5 to complete the sweep.
"We played well against Cal Poly, but we couldn't maintain the pace we implemented at the beginning of the match," said CSUB head coach Cesar Benatti.
Sacramento State, the fifth seed, took an early 2-0 lead against CSUB. The Hornets (8-11) won in straight sets at No. 4 before Andrade and Manzanares went to three sets before losing 15-10.
CSUB flipped teams at two and three. The switch proved to be successfull Garrow and Pratter moved up to two and earned a straight sets victory before Rodriguez and Busler tied the match at two with a three set decision over Kennedy Kurtz and Sarah Davis.
The dual came down to the No. 1 match. Grasso and Little kept the 'Runners alive by winning in three sets. The Roadrunner duo defeated Alexis Skalbeck 21-11 in set one before losing 21-16 in the second. Grasso and Little took the match 15-9 in the third.
"Against Sacramento State, we flipped our teams at two and three," said Benatti. "We thought the matchup were going to work better for us and it ended well for us."
The Roadrunners will take Cal Poly Saturday morning at 11 a.m. to continue consolation bracket play on the Pismo Beach Courts.
