PHOENIX, Ariz.—Grand Canyon defeated CSU Bakersfield 8-3 Sunday afternoon to complete the opening weekend of Western Athletic Conference play.

A two-out, two-RBI Ryan Grotjohn single in the bottom of the first broke the seal for the Roadrunners in the top of the first. The ‘Lopes recorded five hits and took advantage of a CSUB error in the bottom of the first to take a 3-2 lead.

A Tom Lerouge double drove in two of the runs that GCU scored in the bottom of the fourth. Josh Meyer’s single plated the seventh Grand Canyon run in the fifth. The ‘Lopes would add an unearned run in the seventh.

Jack Schneider started for GCU and went the first five innings before giving way to Gabe Benavides who tossed a pair of scoreless innings. The Roadrunners threatened in the eighth, loading the bases with one out against the third Grand Canyon pitcher of the day, Jeramy Smith. Smith induced a Sergio Robles ground out which allowed Max Carter to score. CSUB pinch-hitter Tyler Kaim struck out to wrap up the frame.

Grotjohn posted his ninth multi-hit game of the year as he went 3-for-4. David Metzgar also charted his ninth multi-hit game of 2017, as he was 2-for-3. Tyler Wyatt led GCU, as he was 3-for-4 with two runs scored and a RBI. Meyer was also 3-for-4. Garrison Schwartz, Austyn Bull, and Lerouge would add two hits each for the ‘Lopes (9-13, 3-0 WAC).

"We have some things to work on and we look forward to having a quality practice on Tuesday to prepare for a difficult week ahead," said CSUB head coach Jeremy Beard. "We will learn from several mistakes we made over the past two days and our guys will be eager to fix and mover forward."

The Roadrunners (11-8, 0-3 WAC) head to Loyola Marymount Wednesday night for a 6 p.m. start.
