PHOENIX, Ariz. – Junior Nathan Green continued to lead the Roadrunner men’s golf team as CSU Bakersfield closed out the GCU Invitational on Saturday. In the final round of the 54-hole tournament, freshman Dominick Hoover led the ‘Runners while Green posted his second-best tournament score of the season to pace CSUB on the weekend.

“Today, we did not finish as strong as we hoped as a team,” said Meggan Bunker, Head Coach of the ‘Runners. “We struggled on a few holes at the end of our rounds and it set us back on the leaderboard. We did have a lot of great moments in the tourney and are coming home positive with great things to work on.”

Bunker also commented on some individual performances as well: “Nathan and Warren came in yesterday with record scores for this year and Garry came in with his first 70s score as well. We are moving in the right direction for Cal Poly and the WAC Tournament and we are excited to grind out the rest of the season.”

The Roadrunners maintained a solid pace through the first nine holes in Round 3, but CSUB faltered down the stretch. Hoover, a native of Monterey Bay, Calif., tied his score from Round 1 with another 74 (+3) to pace the ‘Runners. Senior Izzad Ibrahim came into the clubhouse second for CSUB on Saturday with a card of 75. Green’s 77 tied with teammate Garry Cai to round out the ‘Runner scoring four.

Despite posting his highest score of the tournament on Saturday, Green wound up leading the ‘Runners with a 54-hole total of 219 strokes (+6). The three-round score was Green’s second-best of the season and helped the native of Green River, Wyo. tie for 42nd out of 97 student-athletes.

Finishing second overall for the ‘Runners was Hoover, who posted a three-round score of 224 (+11), the freshman’s third-best of the year. Despite scoring a 79 on Saturday, Warren Miller was third for CSUB, one stroke behind fellow freshman Hoover on the tourney. Ibrahim was fourth for the ‘Runners at 234 while Cai rounded out the team at 239.

As a team, the ‘Runners finished the tournament with a round of 303. After posting scores of 301 and 294 on Friday, CSUB wound up in 14th place of 14 teams with a 54-hole tournament score of 898, just two strokes behind Omaha. CSUB’s score of 46-over-par is the third-best three-round total for the ‘Runners this season.

Duke surged through the final day and took a six-stroke victory in the team competition with 829 strokes. Billy Comeaux of Grand Canyon won the individual medal by one stroke with a score of 203.

With the conclusion of the GCU Invitational, the Roadrunners now have a month off before competing again. CSU Bakersfield will next head to the Cal Poly Shootout, Apr. 17-18, at Cypress Ridge Golf Club in Arroyo Grande, Calif.
