BAKERSFIELD, Calif.—No. 9/10 Arizona State defeated CSU Bakersfield 5-0 in beach volleyball action Friday afternoon.
The Sun Devils took a 2-0 lead after flight one. The No. 2 team of Oluoma Okaro and Madison Berridge defeated Jocelyn Rodriguez and Mattison DeGarmo 21-9, 21-13. The Sun Devil No. 4 pair of Ellyson Lundberg and Cassidy Pickrell handed a 21-15, 21-8 defeat to Hannah Manzanares and Madi Busler.
Flight two saw ASU’s No. 1 duo of Bianca Arellano and Whitney Follette clinch the dual victory with a 21-17, 21-12 result over Carol Grasso and Sara Little. Mia Rivera and Sage Patchell fought off the ‘Runner team of Kayla Tinker and Ally Barber at No. 5 21-15, 21-17. The dual concluded at No. 3 where Katie Cross and Katelyn Carballo defeated Sarah Garrow and Ashley Prater 21-19, 21-11.
“We had a tough start during the first flight,” said CSUB head coach Cesar Benatti. “We didn’t compete on a consistent level. As the day went on we got better, but we aren’t at the level of consistency that we need to compete against the top teams.”
CSUB hosts CSUN and Loyola Marymount in a tri-dual beginning at 1 p.m. on Saturday. The day begins with the Roadrunners facing the Matatdors before CSUN matches up with LMU at 3 p.m. The day concludes at 5 with CSUB playing the Lions.
The CSUB Student Recreation Center was opened in 2009 and is the center of student interaction and wellness at CSU Bakersfield. The $24 million facility houses over 75,000 square feet of both exercise equipment and other spaces for fitness, education and recreation for CSUB students, faculty and staff. In 2012, the SRC, CSUB Athletics, along with donors Steve and Lori Barnes partnered to build the sand courts, home of Roadrunner Beach Volleyball and a place for students & community members to participate in this emerging and exciting sport.
