SANTA BARBARA, Calif.--The CSU Bakersfield water polo team resume action at the UC Santa Barbara Winter Invite Saturday.

The morning session saw the 'Runners drop an 11-2 decision to No. 8 Michigan. It was a low scoring first half as the Wolverines led 2-1 at the break. Michigan broke the match open in the third with five goals as Julia Sellers completed a hat trick in the third frame. Kristen Jensen and Cassandra Ream tallied the CSUB goals. Jensen drew two ejections. CSUB goalie Courtney Wahlstrom made 11 saves and three steals.

“We played a great defensive first half,” said CSUB head coach Jason Gall. “Courtney was fantastic and we were really hustling. Michigan started to make some plays in the third quarter and that’s when the game got away from us.”

Grace Doerfier’s goal with 1:30 to go in overtime gave Marist an 11-10 victory over CSUB in Saturday’s nightcap. The Roadrunners led 8-6 at halftime and were up 10-7 at the start of the fourth quarter before the Red Foxes outscored the ‘Runners 3-0 in the final eight minutes of regulation, setting up the game winner for Doerfier. Jensen charted a hat trick and four steals. Jada Helberg scored twice for the Roadrunners, as did Katie Benson.

“We simply didn’t put our shots away in the fourth quarter and overtime,” Gall said. “We played a great three quarters. Jensen was fantastic and really carried us. It’s unfortunate that we couldn’t finish.”

The ‘Runners (1-3) will resume action next Saturday at the California Baptist mini in Riverside. CSUB faces Pomona-Pitzer (ranked second in Division III) at 10:15 a.m. before taking on No. 7 UC Irvine at 4:30 p.m.
