MALIBU, Calif.-- Pepperdine defeated CSU Bakersfield in overtime, 62-57 in women’s basketball play Monday afternoon.

Both teams only made six field goals in the first quarter, however CSUB was 4-of-10 from three-point range to earn a 16-13 advantage. The score was tied at 18 with one minute gone by in the second when Erika Williams scored five points during an 8-0 run that forced the Waves into a timeout.  

Pepperdine would not allow a CSUB field goal over the final 6:03 of the second as the Waves outscored the ‘Runners 9-2 to make it a 28-27 heading into halftime. Williams had 13 of the 28 CSUB points while Pepperdine’s Allie Green scored 13 of the 27 Waves’ points.

A 15-2 Pepperdine run that spanned the final 5:12 of the first half and the first 6:00 of the third quarter that would put the Waves ahead. The Roadrunners scored for the first time since Williams’ free throws with 3:11 to go in the first when Williams’ layup came with exactly 4:00 to go in the third.  An Alexxus Gilbert three-point tied the game 37 seconds later. Pepperdine led 39-37 with one quarter to play.

A Dalis Jones’ three-pointer brought CSUB to 41-40 shortly after the fourth quarter began, but the Waves’ rolled to seven straight. Leading 48-41, the ‘Runners responded with five in a row. At 48-46, Robinson-Bacote was fouled. She sank both for a two-possession game.  On the ensuing Roadrunner possession, Willliams was fouled driving to the lane. Her free throws again created a two-point game. CSUB used a press to force a turnover to regain possession at the two-minute mark. Jazmyne Bartee put back a Jerice Fears miss to tie the game at 50.

CSUB immediately called timeout with 1:39 remaining. Robinson-Bacote missed a short jumper the next time down for the Waves. Bartee grabbed the rebound as the ‘Runners called timeout. It would prove to be an empty possession as Tylinn Carter turned the ball over for the Roadrunners. With 47.7 seconds remaining. Pepperdine called timeout, setting up a go-ahead basket for Robinson-Bacote and the Waves.

CSUB called timeout, advancing the ball to half court. The Roadrunners worked the ball down low for Bartee who tied the game with a layup with 6.2 seconds on the clock. Pepperdine called timeout, advancing the ball to half court. The Waves had a chance to win it at the buzzer, but Megan House missed a short jumper, sending the game to overtime.

WIllliams’ three returned the lead to CSUB to open the extra session. The teams exchanged defensive sports before Pepperdine cut it to one when Green made an 18-foot jumper. A ‘Runner turnover led to Fecske returning the lead to the Waves with a three-point field-goal.  CSUB missed a short jumper but were able to get the ball back on a tie-up. With a fresh 30 seconds to work with, Carter missed from short range. House was called for an offensive foul that returned the ball to CSUB. The Roadrunners missed again from inside the key.

The Roadrunners could not take advantage of a defensive stop when Williams was called for traveling at the 34.3-second mark. Pepperdine broke the press and drew a foul on Kate Tokuhara. Barbara Sitanggan connected on both free throw attempts. CSUB called time out, down 59-55 with 23.5 seconds to go.  CSUB missed the next time down. Fouling Fecske, the 5-7 guard made both free throws for a 61-55 lead. Aja Williams’ layup the next time down was the last Roadrunner points of the game. Pepperdine was fouled on the inbounds pass. Fecske again made two free throws for the final 62-57 score.

"We had our chances to win," said CSUB head coach Greg McCall. "We played hard and did some good things, but we turned the ball over too much in crunch time."

The Pepperdine 2-3 zone limited the Roadrunners to 31.7% shooting for the game (20-63). Pepperdine shot 35.5% (22-62) from the floor. The Waves (2-9) outrebounded the ‘Runners 47-36.  Green led all scorers with 21. Robinson-Bactoe had 14 while Fecske posted 10. Williams paced CSUB with 20. Bartee recorded her first double-double with 10 points and 10 rebounds.

The Roadrunners (4-8) are off until Dec. 28 when CSUB travels to UTEP (2-7) for a 1:05 p.m. (MT) start.
