BAKERSFIELD, Calif.- Despite going the final 4:31 without a field goal the CSUB Roadrunners (7-4) made 12 free throws in the final minutes to hold off a barrage of three-pointers by Portland State (3-4) as CSUB defeated the Vikings 81-79.
“They [Portland State] are a really good team and they can really score the basketball, we had a spurt there in the second half where we put some stops together but they had us in a bad spot all night trying to keep up with them,” said head coach Rod Barnes. “We kind of took control late but didn’t finish the way I would like us to finish but you come out of games like tonight just happy to get the win and get to the next one.”
Portland State entered the contest averaging 87 points per game, 16th-most in the nation, the 79 allowed by CSUB was the most this season, but Bakersfield managed a 15-0 run early in the second half sparked by Damiyne Durham’s 28 points, and made just enough shots down the stretch to win the shootout Saturday night. Durham was 9-16 from the field and 7-13 from three-point range. He scored nine of CSUB’s 15 points during the second-half run.
“He was a great difference-maker, he’s shooting the ball so well, he hit some big shots, some timely shots,” Barnes said.
Durham was joined by Jaylin Airington who added 19 points on 5-13 from the field, 2-4 from three-point range and 7-7 from the free-throw line. Dedrick Basile added 14 in the win on 6-13 from the field. CSUB shot 27-55 in the game (49%) including 54% in the second half. The ‘Runners were also 11-26 (42%) from three-point range in the win and held a 40-32 advantage in rebounding over the Vikings.
Bakersfield led by 10 points with 1:30 to play and again by nine with less than a minute remaining. Portland State would hit one three-pointer to cut the lead to six before Airington made two free throws with 34 seconds remaining to put the lead back to eight. Bryce Canda then hit a three-pointer and was fouled by Durham to convert a four-point play and cut the lead in half with just 28 seconds to go.
CSUB responded with a pair of free-throws to make it a six-point lead before another Deonte North tip in cut the deficit to four. Durham was fouled on the inbound and made one of two free-throws to bring the lead to five. Portland State hit one more three-pointer with three-seconds remaining before Airington took the inbound pass and sailed it into the front court before he could get fouled as time expired. The ‘Runners were 16-25 from the free-throw line and shot 22 second half free-throws.
“We just could not get them stopped,” Barnes said. “But then late the game should have probably been over if we do what we are supposed to do, we didn’t close it well but a wins a win.”
North led Portland State with 25 points on 9-13 from the field and 2-4 from three-point range.
