BAKERSFIELD, Calif.- The CSUB Roadrunners finished the first half on a 19-6 run and led in the second half by as many as 35 sparked by19 points from Damiyne Durham as they cruised to a 79-46 victory Wednesday night over visiting Pacific Union at the Icardo Center.

The Roadrunners trailed once in the contest but responded with a three-pointer for Taze Moore with 7:06 remaining in the first half to take the lead for good. Dedrick Basile would record a pair of back-to-back steals and would finish a three-minute stretch that extended the CSUB lead to 10. The ‘Runners would never lead by fewer than that in the game.

“We had some plays that they took advantage of us with some missed shots because they’ve got a bunch of guards that spread you out,” said CSUB head coach Rod Barnes. “I told our team, we went to the NCAA Tournament last year, everybody is going to try to play us tight…people are going to give us their best shot.”

CSUB had four players in double figures as they took down the Pioneers who played this game as an exhibition under the governing rules of the NAIA. Jaylin Airington added 18 points on 7-11 from the field to go along with eight rebounds and a pair of assists. Matt Smith finished with 11 points and eight rebounds while Basile finished with 10 points and five assists. The Pioneers had entered at 3-1 officially on the season and had most recently lost in another exhibition game 97-93 at Division II Humboldt State. Jayson Marquez led the Pioneers with 13 points.

The Roadrunners defense forced 25 turnovers which led to 26 points for CSUB. They also had 15 steals in the game including five from Durham.

“I think once we got ourselves under control we ended up making that run, got a couple guys out there that felt like we had to get some room,” Barnes said. “They really locked in, they were disciplined and we really made a run and after we did they [Pacific Union] didn’t have enough to come back.”
