SAN FRANCISCO, Calif.—Two CSU Bakersfield wrestlers took home titles while three others placed second at the San Francisco State U-21 Open Sunday afternoon.

Sergio Mendez, a senior who is taking a redshirt during the 2016-17 season, won the 125-pound title. Mendez won his three preliminary bouts by a combined score of 35-5 with one pin. In the finals, Mendez defeated Gilbert Martinez of Sierra College by a 15-10 count.

At 133 pounds, redshirt senior Everett Pratt was victorious. Pratt won four matches by a combined score of 23-6. In the finals, Pratt defeated Trevor Williams 3-1. Williams is scheduled to be a member of the Fresno State squad that resumes varsity action next season.

Jacob Thalin placed second at 157 pounds. Thalin, the No. 2 seed, won three matches leading up to the finals where he lost 4-2 to Fresno State’s Isaiah Hokit, the No. 1 seed. Coming in second at 174 pounds for the Roadrunners was Bryan Battisto. Battisto defeated the top seed, Christian Anguiano, 4-2 in the semifinals before dropping a 11-6 decision to Menlo’s Joseph Jauregui in the finals.

Dominic Balmer earned second at heavyweight. Balmer was edged out in the finals by Stanford’s Trevor Rasmussen. Noah Blakley-Beanes earned a third place finish at 133 pounds. Blakley-Beanes made it to the semfinals before losing to Williams 7-5. He would win a pair of matches in the wrestlebacks including a 4-2 decision against Josh Villafor in the third place bout.

CSU Bakersfield returns to the mats Friday when the Roadrunners host a tri-dual against San Francisco State and No. 12 Rutgers. CSUB and the Gators face each other at 4 p.m. before San Francisco State takes on Rutgers at 5:45 p.m. At 7:30 p.m., the ‘Runners face the Scarlet Knights.
