KANSAS CITY, Mo. – CSU Bakersfield’s women’s soccer team split its Midwest road trip after suffering a 3-0 loss at the hands of the UMKC Kangaroos Sunday afternoon.

“I can’t fault the players for effort or work rate,” said Gary Curneen, Head Coach of the ‘Runners. “We have been consistent in that area throughout the season and were so again today. The game was won and lost in both penalty boxes. We have to take the chances we create and then be more aggressive on the other side. We will look at it this week and make sure we address it before next weekend’s games.”

Abby Small’s first goal of the season put the ‘Roos ahead by a goal in the 37th minute.  Niekie Pellens slotted a through ball for her teammate and Small gave UMKC a 1-0 lead. Junior Maja Green’s header with a little over a minute to play in the first half went just wide as the ‘Runners went to halftime down by a goal.

Two minutes into the second half, the ‘Roos extended their lead to 2-0. Lilly Cobb found herself one-on-one with CSUB keeper Jen Padilla and buried the ball in the back of the net. In the 53rd minute, a corner kick set Cobb up for a congested shot in the middle of the box, but she squirted the ball through several pairs of legs to score her second goal of the match, putting UMKC ahead 3-0.

In the final 30 minutes, CSUB maintained the majority of possession and pressured the UMKC backline often. Despite the opportunities, the ‘Runners were unable to put a goal away and fell by the 3-0 scoreline.

The Roadrunners (6-9-1, 2-2-0 WAC) will return from their Midwest road trip to close out the regular season with three straight WAC home matches. Next week, CSUB will host UT Rio Grande Valley on Oct. 21 before welcoming New Mexico State on Oct. 23. Tickets for both matches are available for purchase ahead of time at GoRunners.com/tix.
