FRESNO, Calif. – Behind freshman Warren Miller’s one-over 72, each member of CSU Bakersfield’s men’s golf team posted rounds in the 70s to close out the Nick Watney Invitational on Tuesday. The Roadrunners’ 296 in the final round lowered CSUB’s previous best in the tournament by 12 strokes.
“The guys played great today,” said Meggan Bunker, Head Coach of the men’s team. “I’m so proud of them and for the comeback they had. We are starting to figure it out and it’s only going to get better. The sparks are starting and the fireworks are coming soon. Northridge, here we come.”
Miller, a native of Bakersfield, Calif., carded three birdies on the way to a one-over 72 on Tuesday. The score tied for CSUB’s lowest single round of the tournament and set a new season best for the 2016 graduate of Liberty High School. Miller came into the clubhouse second for the ‘Runners with a 54-hole total of 229 (+13), another season best for the freshman.
Leading the way in the tournament for CSUB with three solid rounds was junior Nathan Green. The Green River, Wyo. native posted a two-day total of 227, two strokes better than Miller. Green finished the tournament tied for 63rd overall among 89 student-athletes.
Miller and Michael Mahlberg finished the tournament at 229 and tied for 70th. Mahlberg’s first-round 73 and third-round 74 pushed the sophomore through a tough second round of 82. Senior Izzad Ibrahim finished the tournament at 237, fourth for the ‘Runners. Freshman Dominick Hoover rebounded from a slow start on Monday to post his best round of the tournament in the final round with a two-over 73.
CSUB wrapped up the tournament at 914 (+62) after a strong third round. The men of BYU took home the team title at the Nick Watney Invitational with a team score of 853 (+1). Saint Mary’s Perry Cohen held on to a one-stroke lead (208) to take home the individual crown.
The 'Runners will return to action in two weeks with the Cullum Invitational hosted by CSUN. CSUB will be in Simi Valley, Calif. at the Wood Ranch Golf Club, Oct. 17-18.
