After stellar collegiate careers, three former CSU Bakersfield women's soccer players are taking their game to the next level. Tara Corcoran, a 2011 graduate, and Kassi Massey, a 2012 graduate, and Sam Pena, a senior captain for the 2012 squad, have been selected to be members of the Austin Nationals, a professional women's soccer exhibition team based in Austin, Texas.
The former Roadrunners participated in a tryout/combine for the squad Jan. 25-27 and were recently announced as members.
"I am excited for Tara, Kassi and Sam as they get to continue their playing career at such a high level," said CSUB head women's soccer coach Melissa Phillips. "All three were incredible players and leaders within our program and I wish them nothing but the best in their new endeavor."
Corcoran, Massey and Pena will begin their careers with the Nationals on Feb. 16 when they take on Texas A&M in the first match of the spring college tour portion of their schedule. The Nationals will also play exhibition matches against professional teams in the National Women's Soccer League this spring. This summer, they will face teams in the Women's Professional Soccer League among others and are also slated to go on an international tour in the fall.
In the CSUB record book, Pena, a Bakersfield native who went to Bakersfield High School, is fifth all time in career goals (19), seventh in points (45) and tied for 14th in appearances (73). Massey, a forward from Bakersfield, Calif. who attended Stockdale High School, is 10th all time in career goals with 10 and 14th all-time in appearances with 73 in her tenure as a Roadrunner. Corcoran, a defender from La Verne, Calif., had two sensational seasons for CSUB after transferring to the 'Runners from Cerritos College. She has spent the last two years playing professional soccer in Serbia.
