SACRAMENTO, Calif.-The CSUB Roadrunners will look for their
first win of the young season Wednesday night as they play their second game in
three days in Northern California taking on Sacramento State (1-0) in the State
Capital.
The 'Runners are coming off a 78-65 setback at Cal on Sunday
night, that was following their season opening 62-60 loss to UT Arlington on
Friday night. The Hornets meanwhile are 1-0 after defeating NAIA UC Merced
96-62 last Friday night.
The Roadrunners will look to get things into the winning
column on Wednesday in Sacramento and hope to build off a strong second-half
effort at Cal. Offensively CSUB improved by shooting 10% higher on Sunday night
than opening and know its just a matter of time before the team gets
collectively on the same page.
CSUB has been led
offensively thus far by the guard pair of Javonte Maynor (So., Atlanta, Ga.,
Georgia State) and Stephon Carter (Sr., Bakersfield, Calif., Garces HS). Maynor
scored 14 points in the 'Runners loss to UT Arlington and secured a late steal
and layup that gave the 'Runners a brief lead in the closing seconds before UT
Arlington answered back with the game winner. Carter meanwhile scored 15 points
on Sunday night at Cal and is now averaging 13.5 ppg.
Like the 'Runners, Sacramento State returns eight letter winners
from a team that went 10-18 last season and 5-11 in the Big Sky Conference.
CSUB defeated Sacramento State last season at the Icardo Center 63-60 in a game
that saw CSUB dominate the pace and the scoring until a late second-half
Sacramento State run made things interesting in the final minute. A game-tying
three-point attempt by Sacramento State fell short at the buzzer.
Among the many
contributors returning to the team for the Hornets this year is senior guard
wing player Joe Eberhard who averaged 11 ppg last season. He had 12 points in
the season opening win. He's joined by Dickson who averaged 12.4 ppg last sea-
son. Junior guard Jackson Carbajal also returns having averaged 12 ppg last
season for Sacramento State.
Sacramento has been
kind to the Roadrunners with CSUB posting an all-time 10-3 record at the Hornet's
Nest while the 'Runners have also won all the meetings at the Division I level
and are 4-0 against the Hornets.
Wednesday night's
game is available on KERN Newstalk 1180 beginning with the Dignity Health Shoot
Around Show at 6:30 P.M. followed by tip off at 7:05. Corey Costelloe calls the
action with live audio also available via Runner Zone at www.GoRunners.com.
