NORTHRIDGE,
Calif. - The CSU Bakersfield cross country team put up its fastest team average
of the season and was led by Jazmin Lopez (Sr., Baldwin Park, Calif., Mt. San Antonio
College), who finished 11th individually, on Saturday at the Cal State
Northridge Invitational.
In the final
regular season meet of the year for CSUB, every 'Runner put up their fastest 5K
time of the year. Lopez clocked
the fastest CSUB time with a mark of 18:43.23 to take 11th. CSUB
finished sixth in the team standings with an average time of 19:30.
"It was a very
competitive race and we handled it extremely well," said CSUB head coach Ashley Benson. "Our top five were under 20 minutes or right at it, which is actually
outstanding. Jazmin was great as usual, but our two, three, four runners ran as
a team which is what the top programs in the country strive to do."
Cecilia Lopez (Sr., Bakersfield, Calif., North HS) finished in 32nd place (19:31.74), Anaiz Ortiz (Jr., Palmdale, Calif., Antelope Valley College) followed in 33rd
(19:32.67), Kaylee Moyer (Fr., Bakersfield, Calif., North HS) placed 35th
(19:37.74) and Jorey Braughton (Jr., Bakersfield, Calif., Centennial HS) took
43rd (20:02.15).
UNLV took first
place in the team standings, led by Lauren Petersen, who bested the 61-runner
field with a time of 17:54.51.
CSUB's
successful meet is a good sign headed into the 'Runners' first-ever Great West
Championship meet, another 5K that will be held on Oct. 27 in Chicago, Ill.
