In its final
regular-season meet of the season before competing in its first-ever Great West
Conference Championship meet, the CSU Bakersfield cross country team will be
racing in the Cal State Northridge Invitational on Saturday.
The 'Runners
will head to Chicago, Ill. on Oct. 27 to run in the GWC championship meet. Both
the Northridge Invitational and the GWC Championship will be 5K races.
"This is our
last tuneup opportunity before the GWC championships. It is nice that it is a
short course, a 5K as opposed to a 6K, and a good opportunity to sharpen up and
get the wheels turning for conference," said CSUB head coach Ashley Benson. "It
should be a positive experience as we proceed in the tapering phase of our
training in preparing for the conference meet."
CSUB joined the GWC as an affiliate member prior to the 2012 season, but it now turns out that this will be the 'Runners' only season in the GWC as the entire CSUB athletic program accepted an invitation to join the Western Athletic Conference on Tuesday. The membership will officially begin prior to the fall 2013 season for the majority of CSUB's sports programs, including cross country.
Saturday's race
is slated to start at 8 a.m. The men's and women's races will include teams
from Clendale College, LA Trade Tech, Pepperdine, UC Santa Barbara, UNLV
and the host Matadors as well as several unattached athletes.
