Taylor Sweeps Sprints In Record-breaking GWC Wins

HUMBLE, Texas - In a historic day for the CSU Bakersfield track and field program, sophomore star sprinter Jordan Taylor (Palmdale, Calif., William Knight HS) swept the sprinting events at CSUB's first-ever Great West Conference Outdoor Track and Field Championship meet, winning titles in the 100- and 200-meter dash on Saturday.

Taylor earned the GWC Championship Meet Male Outstanding Performance honors after his 100 time of 10.27 seconds and his 200 time of 20.84 not only set CSUB school records, but also broke the GWC records as the fastest ever. He also notched a 46.7 split in the Roadrunners 4X400 men's relay that set new CSUB and GWC records.

"I feel amazing. I achieved a seasonal best, a personal best, and broke both the conference record and my school's record," Taylor said. "I'm glad for my team and proud that I could represent us well, being that we are newcomers to this conference.  I feel this is a great way to come and set a standard.  That makes me happy. I feel good that I could come here and win big. I've been trying all year to beat my personal record, and being able to do that and set a conference record means I am able to perform when it really matters."

All together the Roadrunners had three individual champions, including CSUB's Thomas Judge (Jr., Bakersfield, Calif., Garces HS) hammer victory that also set a GWC record. The CSUB men's and women's teams combined to post 12 seasonal-best times and eight personal records. In the team standings, the Roadrunner men placed fifth while the women took sixth out of eight teams. Utah Valley won the men's and women's overall team titles.

"I am very proud of our team for representing CSUB in a positive fashion both on and off the track," said CSUB head coach Alan Collatz. The student-athletes competed well and gave all they had for the team. Jordan was amazing. His 10.27, 20.84 and 46.7 split in the 4X400 relay is one of the best performances in CSUB history in any sport."

Taylor helped the men's 4X100 team, along with Justus Mora (So., Sparks, Nev., Spanish Springs HS), Richard Maestre (So., Bakersfield, Calif., South HS) and Brandon Washington (R-Sr., Sanford, Fla., Seminole HS) take second with a time of 41.97. Maestre also placed third in the 110 hurdles with a time of 15.06 and finished in sixth in the 400 hurdles with a time of 56.58. Mora took seventh in the 100-meter dash with a time of 10.98. The same foursome ran in the CSUB 4X400 relay, which took fifth with a time of 3:22.13.

In men's discus, sophomore Gabe Holland (Anchorage, Alaska, Univ. of Alaska) took third with a toss of 155-08 and Collin Ellis (R-Jr., Bakersfield, Calif., Bakersfield HS) followed in fifth with a throw of 149-05.

After taking fourth in the high jump on Friday, David Charleston (R-Sr., Bakersfield, Calif., West HS) placed fourth in the triple jump after leaping 42-08.25 on Saturday.

In women's action,  Alyssa Page (Fr., Santa Rosa, Calif., Montgomery HS) took third in the 200-meter dash with a mark of 24.33 seconds and took fifth in the 400-meter dash with a time of 56.96 and Antionette Garrett (So., Las Vegas, Nev. Western HS) followed in sixth place with a 57.55. Both then teamed up with Taevionna Wilson (Fr., Antioch, Calif., Antioch HS) and Erica Hawkins (Jr., Bakersfield, Calif., Shafter HS) to take fourth in the 4X100 relay with a time of 48.32. Garrett, Page, Wilson and Princess Watts (Sr., Apple Valley, Calif., Granite Hills HS) combined efforts to take third in the 4X400 relay with a time of 3:50.16.
