BAKERSFIELD, Calif. ? Amanda Ortiz, Veronica Campbell and Katherine Gillett have earned 2008 Association of Collegiate Water Polo Coaches Women's All-American Academic honors and have also been named to the Women's Western Water Polo Association All-Academic Team, the associations recently announced. In addition, the CSUB squad earned ACWPC team recognition, while two additional Roadrunners were included on the WWPA academic team.
Ortiz, a business administration major; Campbell, a psychology major; and Gillett, a chemistry major, all carried better than a 3.20 cumulative grade point average through the end of the 2008 spring quarter to earn eligibility on the ACWPC academic team. Additional requirements included receiving significant playing time and being in at least their second year of competition.
The Roadrunner team GPA of 2.96 put CSUB in the top third of all NCAA universities sponsoring women's water polo and the top third of all Division I programs. Harvard topped the ACWPC list with a cumulative team GPA of 3.40.
In the Western Water Polo Association, Ortiz, Campbell and Gillett were joined by Petra Koudelkova (criminal justice major) and Becky Seelos (history major) on the All-Academic Team, which required a 3.0 or higher cumulative GPA. Ortiz and Campbell were also named WWPA Player of the Year and Newcomer of the Year, respectively, following the 2008 season.
