BAKERSFIELD, Calif. ? CSUB juniors Amanda Ortiz and Veronica Campbell were both named to the NCAA Division I Association of Collegiate Water Polo Coaches 2008 All-American honorable mention team, as voted on by ACWPC members.
A combined 21 athletes were named to the first, second and third All-American Teams, while 27 others earned honorable mention recognition. UCLA's Adam Krikorian and Courtney Mathewson were named Coach of the Year and Player of the Year, respectively, after the Bruins claimed the NCAA DI National Championship.
Ortiz finished the 2008 season tied for third nationally in goals (104), while also finishing fifth in goals per game (3.2). She was named the Western Water Polo Association Player of the Year, and earned WWPA first team honors after leading the Roadrunners in scoring in 24 of their 37 games.
Campbell had an equally impressive season for CSUB, leading the nation in saves (429) and saves per game (14.0). The 6-1 transfer from Diablo Valley Junior College was named the WWPA Newcomer of the Year, earned WWPA first team honors and her 429 blocks were both single-season and career records for the Roadrunner program.
Both players were instrumental in leading Bakersfield to a 19-18 overall record and a sixth place finish at the WWPA Championships.
