ROADRUNNER GAME NOTES
Last Time Out The Roadrunners went 1–1 over the weekend, placing second at the Women of Troy Basketball Classic at USC. After a dominating 74–37 victory over Delaware State on Saturday night, CSUB squared off against host USC on Sunday evening. Despite holding a first half lead, the Roadrunners fell to the Women of Troy, 93–56. Senior Katie Williams and junior Tamiko Davis were each named to the all–tournament team for their weekend performances. Williams averaged 23.5 points over the two games and Davis had a double–double (11 points/10 rebounds) on Sunday.
Williams Extends Streak Katie Williams has now scored in double–figures the last 29 consecutive games, dating back to the midway point of the 2008–09 season. The transfer from Reedley College leads the 2009–10 Roadrunners in points (20.5), minutes (31.8) and steals (4.1). Her school–record 11 steals vs. Utah Valley is the nation’s third highest individual game total this year.
200 With a victory over Miami (Ohio) University on Tuesday, CSUB will have secured its 200th all–time victory (199–73). That would mean in just under 10 seasons of existence, the Roadrunners would have averaged more than 20 wins per year.
Defensive Delaware Against Delaware State in the Women of Troy Basketball Classic opening round, CSUB’s defense stepped up to steal the show and tied a couple of program records in the process. The 10 first–half points allowed tied a record set against Grand Canyon during the program’s inaugural 2000–01 season. CSUB allowed just four first–half field goals, a feat the Roadrunners accomplished earlier this season against Utah Valley (12–9–09). The Hornets were also held to just 23.6 percent shooting which came within four tenths of a percentage of tying the program record for lowest opponent field goal percentage (23.2%, Western Oregon, 11–21–03).
Holding 60 CSUB is now an impressive 82–0 all time record when holding opponents under 60 points. The win over Utah Valley (12–9–09) was the Roadrunners’ first under–60 victory of the year and 10 days later, CSUB allowed Delaware State (12–19–09) to score just 37 points. The 36 points allowed to Utah Valley is a program record. Last season, the Roadrunners held seven opponents under 60 points.
It Fits Through 12 games this year, some similarities are emerging in the Roadrunners. CSUB has won all its games when it led at the half, led with five minutes remaining in the game, shot more free-throws and shot better than its opponent. Conversely, the Roadrunners are 0–7 when they trail with five minutes to go, shoot equal or fewer free-throws and shoot worse than their opponent.
Turn What Overs In every game this season, CSUB has held a positive turnover margin and, until Sunday’s contest against USC, had forced at least 20 in each (USC committed 14). CSUB’s 10.67 turnover margin is the nation’s second highest mark. CSUB is also ranked eighth in steals per game (13.2) and was 14th three–point field goals per game (8.1) and 19th in points per game (77.3) .
Plenty of Points The 105–point effort against Hawaii was CSUB’s first 100-plus point performance since Feb. 10, 2007, against Cal State Stanislaus. This also marked the first time that the Roadrunners have surpassed the 100–point barrier against an NCAA Division I opponent.
The Future Signs CSUB has signed three incoming freshmen for the 2010–11 season. The fall recruiting class includes Madison McKenney of Santa Margarita Catholic High School, Tyonna Outland of Lynwood High School and Marilyn Naderhoff of West Hills High School.
Waiting for History After becoming the only school in NCAA history to make the NCAA tournament every year of its existence while competing in Division II, the ‘Runners will have to wait two more seasons before they can hope to build upon that distinction as a Division I school. CSUB will be NCAA Tournament eligible for the 2010–11 season.
Up Next After the Christmas break, CSUB returns to action with a 7 p.m. home contest against San Jose State at the Icardo Center on Tuesday, Dec. 19.
