Since joining CSUB as the Assistant Athletics Director for Annual Giving in April of 2014, Mr. Castro’s primary goals have been to increase awareness of, and membership to, the Roadrunner Scholarship Fund. He has successfully managed the fund, including donor stewardship, event coordination, and implementation of new fundraising initiatives. These initiatives, such as student-athlete phone-a-thons, have helped increase membership by about 400 new members during the 2014–15 fiscal year. He played an integral part in development of the Fund’s Website redesign by building and managing content and communication; and development of a social media campaign to increase awareness of the fund.
In 2016 he was named Assistant Athletics Director for Development.
Castro believes in a culture of Thank You, making sure donors know that their support is appreciated is key to continuing and growing support. He also believes that philanthropy is not about what someone gives, but the fact they give. Lastly, he believes in the cause — providing an education to a student that also happens to be an athlete.
Before joining California State University – Bakersfield (CSUB), Castro worked with Aggie Athletics (New Mexico Status University [NMSU]) where he held various sales and development positions. During his time at NMSU, Castro increased new sponsorship sales and season ticket holders. He increased membership to the Aggie Athletic Scholarship Fund, and managed the NMSU’s Football Success Fund — highlighted by new memberships from two NFL football players.
Castro earned a bachelor’s degree in business administration with emphasis in marketing from NMSU. He then worked for 6 years as a research manager at APCO Worldwide, a public relations firm located in Washington D.C., conducting global strategic opinion research for Fortune 100 companies and organizations. In 2011 Castro earned a master’s degree in sports industry management from Georgetown University.
A native of Las Cruces, NM, Castro and his wife, Jennifer, have one son, Dorian.
