Karen Langston is the Associate Director of Athletics for External Affairs. She is responsible for major gift solicitation and relationship management and is currently the supervising administrator for marketing and advertising, ticketing, and the liaison to Roadrunner Sports Properties and Learfield Sports, the multi-media rights holder for Roadrunner Athletics. She is the sport administrator for volleyball, sand volleyball, and wrestling teams. Previous responsibilities include supervision of sports medicine, strength and conditioning, Roadrunner Scholarship Fund (annual fund), women’s basketball, women’s soccer, and women’s tennis.
Langston joined the Roadrunner Athletics administrative team as the first-ever Director of Sales and Marketing in 2002. At that time, she was charged with developing a successful corporate partnership program and growing attendance along with the oversight of ticketing. Langston led the committee that developed the visual marks that are used by the department today, and was instrumental in developing the nationally recognized marketing campaign “The New Gold Standard”. She also developed the highly–regarded Rowdy about Reading program which reached more than 3,000 local elementary students annually. WINGS, Women Influencing the Next Generation through Sports, a mentoring program geared toward the issues of female student athletes, was also created by Langston. Under her direction, the Roadrunner Scholarships Fund had the most productive years in its 30-year history in 2013 and 2014.
Langston is originally from Bakersfield and was a highly-decorated three-sport (volleyball, basketball, softball) prep athlete at North High School. Her accomplishments earned her a place in their Athletics Hall of Fame in 2014. Collegiately, she went on to captain the Cal State Northridge volleyball team, earning All-America and Conference Player of the Year honors while leading the Matadors to 3 consecutive NCAA Championship appearances including one national title. Langston earned her B.S. from Cal State Northridge in business administration with an emphasis in marketing and advertising. In 2009, she earned her Master's degree in Public Administration from CSUB where she was a member of the Pi Alpha Alpha National Honors Society and graduated summa cum laude.
She began her professional career in television advertising sales, first in Bakersfield then in San Francisco. She worked with corporations including Ford, Chevron, McDonalds, Coca-Cola, Fox Films, and Safeway and specialized in sports sponsorships for the San Francisco Giants and 49ers as well as NASCAR. As a top seller in both Bakersfield and San Francisco, Langston assumed many leadership roles including Political Advertising Liaison for WB20 during the 1996 Presidential election. While in San Francisco, she was an Officer and member of the Board of Directors for Bay Area Society of Television and Radio, a networking and fundraising organizations that supported education in the communications industry and provided a networking forum for advertising professionals.Langston is a member of the National Association of Collegiate Directors of Athletics (NACDA/NAADD/NACMA) and National Association of Collegiate Women Athletics Administrators (NACWAA) where she currently serves on the Membership Committee. She is a member of NCAA Pathway's class of 2016.
