BAKERSFIELD, Calif. – Equipped with experience on the court and in the sand, Sydney Haynes has signed a National Letter of Intent to attend CSU Bakersfield and become a student-athlete on the Roadrunner indoor volleyball and sand volleyball teams.
Haynes comes to the 'Runners from Vancouver, Wash., where she played indoor volleyball for Evergreen High School and the Clark County Juniors Volleyball Club. The 6-foot-1 middle blocker also played sand volleyball for the NP Beach Club. Last summer, Haynes and her partner placed second in the 18U West Coast Beach Volleyball Championships, one of the biggest amateur sand volleyball tournaments in the country.
"Sydney is unique in that she brings experience for both indoor and sand volleyball. I think her physicality and fast arm will put her in the mix to compete for a spot in the middle this fall," said CSUB head indoor volleyball coach Jolene Shepardson. "Sydney has a tremendous upside to her game coming from a very athletic, driven family. She fits perfectly in with our team and program because she has a strong passion for both indoor and sand. Her experience makes her an important piece to our sand team next spring."
Haynes had an impressive career at Evergreen High School, where she was named to the Greater St. Helen's All-League First Team in 2012, was honored as a scholar athlete all four years of her high school tenure, and was a Dick Grabenhorst Memorial Scholarship winner. She is set to graduate in the top five percentile of her class at Evergreen and also won the school's Academic Language Award.
An all-around athlete, Haynes also competed in track and field for the Plainsmen. In the classroom, she's never had a GPA lower than 3.8. She's also a member of Key Club and FCA (Fellowship of Christian Athletes).
At CSUB, Haynes is set to study nursing with a Spanish minor. She hopes to work in a neonatal intensive care unit after college.
Haynes will be joining the Roadrunners at a very exciting time in the program's history as sand volleyball just completed its inaugural season this spring and the indoor volleyball team is entering its first season playing as a member of the Western Athletic Conference in the 2013-14 season.
