The CSU Bakersifeld
volleyball team will be adding some local flare to its roster as Bakersfield
High School's Sara Little will be joining the Roadrunners for the 2012 season.
The incoming 5-foot-10
freshman will be a middle blocker/right side for CSUB. In her senior year,
Little helped the Drillers go 21-13 and advanced to the second round of the CIF
Central Section Division I playoffs before falling to eventual section champion
Clovis West.
"We are
looking forward to having such a great kid with raw athleticism in our gym for
the next four years," said CSUB head volleyball coach Jolene Shepardson. "Sara
has an incredible upside. She only started playing two years ago. Once I had
the opportunity to work with her at camp last summer I knew I wanted her on our
team. She has such a strong desire to learn the details of the game and she is
so eager to get better. Combine her desire and athletic ability, she is going
to be a great asset to the Roadrunner future."
Another factor
that helped Little, an all-around athlete that also played prep soccer, become such
a talented player despite only playing volleyball for two years, is that Little
plays for the Bakersfield Volleyball Club under coach Judy Rexroth.
Little becomes the seventh
new addition to the 2012 Roadrunner squad, which will be looking to build on
its success from the 2011 season when CSUB was the sixth most improved team in
Division I volleyball in Shepardson's first season as head coach after she
helped the program rebound from an 0-31 season in 2010 to an 8-18 season in
2011.
