FLAGSTAFF, Ariz.
- Over a dozen personal-best times were set, along with another 20
season-best marks, as the CSU Bakersfield men's and women's track and field
teams had their best meet of the 2012 indoor season at the Northern Arizona
University Open on Saturday.
Leading the way were the
men's distance runners, Rudy Castro (Fr., Bakersfield, Calif., South HS), Derek
Stotle (Fr., Vista Calif., Rancho Buena Vista HS) and Miguel Gonzalez, who
finished 1-2-3 in the one-mile with times of 5:04.54, 5:05.34 and 5:19.55. The
'Runner women also did well in the distance category, as Jazmin Lopez (Jr.,
Baldwin Park, Calif., Mt. San Antonio College) took second in the 3,000-meter
with a time of 11:41.09 and was followed by Monica Guzman (So., Bakersfield,
Calif., Garces HS) with a 11:56.96 for fifth place.
"It was a good meet for
us," said CSUB head track and field coach Alan Collatz. "We are getting better
each week. We set over a dozen personal bests and over 20 seasonal bests. We
are looking forward to next week."
Among some of the
Roadrunners to set PRs were: Michael Davis (Pacoima, Calif., Fresno City
College), with a 6.75-second time in the 60-meter prelims and Jordan Taylor's
(So., Palmdale, Calif., William Pete Knight HS) time of 6.81 in the prelims of
the same event. Davis placed fifth in the finals (6.83), while Taylor took 10th
(6.89). On the women's side, Alyssa Page (Fr., Santa Rosa, Calif., Montgomery
HS) clocked a time of 7.77 seconds in the 60 finals to place eighth, Antionette
Garrett (Fr., Las Vegas, Nev., Western HS) set an indoor PR in the 400 with a
time of 58.97, which was good enough for 13th. Sara Nielson (Jr., La
Quinta, Calif., South HS) also set a PR in the 60 hurdles with a 9.20 mark for
sixth place.
Team results were not
kept in the meet, which featured athletes from schools like Arizona, Arizona
State, San Diego State, Cal State Dominguez Hills and the host Lumberjacks
among others.
The CSUB squads will return
to Flagstaff for the third time this year to conclude the indoor season on Feb.
11 when it will be competing in the Northern Arizona University Invitational.
The Roadrunners will kick off the outdoor season March 9-10 at the Ben Brown
Invitational in Fullerton, Calif.
